Randall, author of xkcd, has blogged about a keyboard he made that has no keys that can interrupt the OS while typing. He plans on trying to type in his dreams. When he has dreams, he sometimes realizes it and is able to interact with it. Reading about it reminded me of the time I realized that if Google stopped working right, I might accidentally kill myself.
In my dream, I looked at a clock, and it was blinking twelve. I really wanted to know the time, so I started looking for other things with clocks. No two agreed, and I was starting to panic, since I really needed to know the time for some reason. Finally, I went to Google and searched for “current time”. Up popped a list of results, including Time Magazine and currenttimes.com, which looked to be a celebrity gossip site. I knew that some sort of atomic clock page would be in the top ten, and when I didn’t see it, and realized was dreaming. Since I knew I was dreaming, I thought “I should go downstairs and jump through the plate glass window! It will be fun!”
When I woke up and thought about it I realized that I made the decision to jump through the window based solely on the fact that Google gave me bad results. Luckily, Google never fails, and the window in my room isn’t followed by a 20-story drop like it was in the dream.
