Western Herald Website Censored?

The Western Herald ran a story about the parking lot complaints that Dustin and I have been organizing. The article did a great job of expressing how many students are in support of our efforts and the final plans for our effort, something that other local media hasn’t really covered.

When we went to add a link to the article to the press section of the greenspace website, we discovered that the online edition of the Herald omitted the article, even though the rest of the front page articles were there. The negative editorial about the lot was featured, and listed as the most popular article.

I called up the office and spoke to someone who said they would talk to the proper people about the omission. I also left a quick email for the web editor. Today the article is still not up, so I find it hard to believe that this is a simple mistake on their part.

If the Herald is allowing WMU to control them by not letting them post articles critical of the administration (which would show up on the page all students use to access online resources from WMU), then they obviously do not show the journalistic integrity that should be taught to all of the Journalism majors at our university.

UPDATE: The Herald is going to be putting it up online.  They claim it was an honest mistake.

Q: How does an elephant get up a tree?

A: He sits on an acorn and waits.

Or, for a quicker solution he can use this device patented by Hermann Reiche in 1891.

[The invention enables] heavy quadrupeds to walk up and mount the top of the platform, as shown by the elephant in the drawings, or, in other words, “to enable an elephant to climb up a tree.”

You can read it online! You should go read it online.

Dinosaur Comics reminded me of an awesome story that everyone should read.

Read the story online here.  I’m pretty sure I have a book by Asimov where he says this is one of his favourites, but I could be making that up.

Baby Turtle Update - The Last One Hatched

Baby #3 was over with his brother in the corner when I got up. But he still
had his egg shell on his back. So I sprayed him with water and it loosened and
came off. He is a big one. I think he is fatter then #2. Cari wants to call
one Squirtle after a Pokemon creater. Mike doesn’t know yet. I just call them
1, 2 and 3. They have different neck markings so we can tell them apart. I
have seen 2 eating. I got them weeds from the pond and they like it. Plus I’m
giving them fish food flakes like the books say. We have our fingers crossed
for them to do good. They are lively. Here are the pictures of #3 and his
brothers. (I call them brothers because I think they will be the new Teenage
Mutant Turtles) Enjoy. Jeanna

Baby Turtle Update - They Hatched!

When we got up this morning baby #2 was swimming in his pond. Baby #1 was still very quiet. He had been on his back in shell. We had turned him over last night. He seemed weak and still. So we dipped him egg and all in water. The second time when I put him on shore he came out. Now he is swimming and doing good. He is smaller then the other one. #3 is still just poking his beak out. He should be out by tomorrow.

Baby Turtles

My mom wrote me an email today about some baby turtles she is hatching:

Two weeks ago Dave dug up a turtle nest when working on the bank of the pond. He saved 4 eggs and gave them to Mike. We looked up how to take care of them. We found out we may have hurt them already with the move. But 3 had something in them when I candled them. So I fixed a tank with heat lights and misted them several times a day and talked to them. Sunday morning Cari saw one was hatching. By night 2 had opened up. It says it will take up to 3 days for them to turn over and come out of the shells. As of this morning one is winking at me and one just waves when I mist them. They will be about the size of a quarter. This is their first pictures. The are little red eared sliders. Not the giant anaconds I was afraid they would be. I’ll keep yopu updated. They say the first year is the hardest. BUt atleast they are hatching. Mike hasn’t named them yet.

Western Michigan University Spent $120k on Parking Lot no One Wants

1351331145_489892a418.jpg Western Michigan University has spent $120,000 on this ugly plaza. They intend to tear it back up in a few years when they renovate Sangren Hall. I haven’t heard anyone say anything good about it so far.My roommate has set up a website with copies of all of the invoices and more pictures here: http://greenspace.virtualroadside.com

The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife

A comment at Pharyngula pointed out the similarity of the cake I linked to strongly resembles this Japanese erotic woodcarving from 1820.

We monitor the traffic here at this site using my program Obsessive Website Statistics, which has the ability to generate neat little heatmaps. Well, this site got linked from boingboing about the previous post, so the heatmap is pretty amusing. Check it out.
